Manchester United have Sacked Jose Mourinho on the back of a poor start to the season, their worst start since 1990-1991 season.
They have won just two of their last eight matches in all competitions and sit 11 points off fourth place in the Premier League.
Mourinho has always hinted that he was unhappy at the club after a lackluster summer transfer window. United failed to spend big to give Jose what he wanted, top of his shopping priority list being a top Center back and he now leaves after two-and-a-half years, with his final match in charge Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to arch-rivals Liverpool.
The official statement read, “Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect,”
“The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.
“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”
In May 2016, Mourinho signed a three-year deal as manager of Manchester United. In his first season in charge the club won the Community Shield, the League Cup and the UEFA Europa League. He started well, winning three trophies in his first season not quite the United way but the fans finally seemed happy after having the glory back at Old Trafford.
Mourinho’s second season in was great with United finishing just second in the Premier League to Pep Guardiola’s record-breaking Manchester City, and while they crashed out of the Champions League to Sevilla in the last 16 and lost the FA Cup final to Chelsea, there was hope the former Real Madrid boss would be able to kick on again having signed a new improved contract in the early weeks of 2018.
That has not not happened, however, with United currently on a run of just two wins from eight matches in all competitions.
As the official statement read United will be working hard over the months to get a permanent replacement for Jose Mourinho after failing to replace Sir Alex over the past couple of years and a caretaker will be appointed until the end of the season. The caretaker will be of United DNA with Ole Gunner Solskjaer being the front runner.
Michale Carrick is not taking the interim role but will be in charge of team’s proceedings, he will be training the squad until someone is appointed. Zinedine Zidane and Mauricio Pochettino, meanwhile, are among the favourites to take the role full-time come the summer.
